It seems hydrogen cars are finally gaining some traction. The first serially produced, hydrogen-driven (fuel cell) cars are now available and that means an infrastructure of hydrogen refueling stations has to be built, according to the Dutch Standardization Organization (NEN). Therefore, NEN has issued a call for public input on a new European Standard for refueling stations. The deadline for responses is August 24, 2017. The new standard (EN 17127) will define the minimum requirements to ensure the interoperability of public hydrogen refueling points, including refueling protocols for the dispensing of gaseous hydrogen to road vehicles (e.g. Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles). Such protocols are also relevant for those who transport gaseous hydrogen. Transportation of hazardous gases will be featured in Fluids Processing No. 4 (to be published on September 26, 2017).

In the future, European legislation will refer to EN 17127. Input received from Dutch sources will be discussed in the Dutch ‘Hydrogen and Fuel Cells’ committee. Members of this committee will decide which responses are to be passed on to the CEN. After its publication, the European Standard will also be adopted as a standard in the Netherlands.
